Book Haul 1/22/2016

Hello readers! I have a short book haul for you today. I had a bookstore date with my sister in law yesterday, and got a few goodies to read! I'm pretty excited about what I got, so let's dive into it!

Haul:

Goodreads Summary: As Princess of Wonderland Palace and the future Queen of Hearts, Dinah’s days are an endless monotony of tea, tarts, and a stream of vicious humiliations at the hands of her father, the King of Hearts. The only highlight of her days is visiting Wardley, her childhood best friend, the future Knave of Hearts — and the love of her life.
When an enchanting stranger arrives at the Palace, Dinah watches as everything she’s ever wanted threatens to crumble. As her coronation date approaches, a series of suspicious and bloody events suggests that something sinister stirs in the whimsical halls of Wonderland. It’s up to Dinah to unravel the mysteries that lurk both inside and under the Palace before she loses her own head to a clever and faceless foe.

Part epic fantasy, part twisted fairy tale, this dazzling saga will have readers shivering as Dinahs furious nature sweeps Wonderland up in the maelstrom of her wrath.

Familiar characters such as Cheshire, the White Rabbit, and the Mad Hatter make their appearance, enchanting readers with this new, dark take on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
Goodreads Rating: 3.63 with over 2,500 ratings
Genre listing: Fantasy, Young Adult, Fairytale retelling
Get the Book: AmazonBook Depository

Initial thoughts: I'm super excited about this book. I love anything that has to do with Alice in Wonderland, and this sounds like it's going to provide a very interesting twist to the classic. I can't wait to read this! I love that the cover looks like a Queen of Hearts card, as well. Very cool.

Goodreads Summary: New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts deftly blends romance and suspense in this compelling novel of a woman whose career, marriage, and very life are threatened by the truth about her own past.
Emma McAvoy may have grown up in the limelight, but some secrets are hidden in a darkness no light can reach. Now on the verge of a successful career, and having fallen in love with the man of her dreams, Emma is looking to the future. Yet it’s the past that is about to catch up with her.

For Emma, her childhood had been almost like a rags-to-riches fairy tale—until the tragic night that changed her family forever. But what Emma thinks she knows about that terrible night and the man she’s about to marry is only half the truth. The other half is locked away in the last place she’d ever think to look: her own memories. It’s a mystery a handsome and relentlessly driven homicide detective needs to solve in a case that’s haunted him for years—and a secret someone will kill to keep.
Goodreads Rating: 3.94 with over 10,000 ratings
Genre Listing: Romance, Suspense, Fiction, Contemporary, Mystery

Initial thoughts: I've never actually read a Nora Roberts book. I always felt like they were just straight romance novels, and I'd like something a little more than that. I decided when Heather and I went to HPB that I'd ask her to pick me out a Nora Roberts book. So this is what she picked for me. I like that it's got some mystery to it, so we'll see how I like it. Trying to expand my horizons a bit.

Goodreads Summary: Forgive us, Father, for we have sinned
Brooklyn Stevens sits in a pool of her own blood, tied up and gagged. No one outside of these dank basement walls knows she’s here. No one can hear her scream.

Sofia Flores knows she shouldn’t have gotten involved. When she befriended Riley, Grace, and Alexis on her first day at school, she admired them, with their perfect hair and their good-girl ways. They said they wanted to save Brooklyn. They wanted to help her. Sofia didn’t realize they believed Brooklyn was possessed.

Now, Riley and the girls are performing an exorcism on Brooklyn—but their idea of an exorcism is closer to torture than salvation. All Sofia wants is to get out of this house. But there is no way out. Sofia can’t go against the other girls . . . unless she wants to be next. . . .

In this chilling debut, Danielle Vega delivers blood-curdling suspense and terror on every page. By the shockingly twisted end, readers will be faced with the most haunting question of all: Is there evil in all of us?
Goodreads Rating: 3.62 with over 6,000 ratings
Genre Listing: Horror, Fiction, Young Adult, Paranormal

Initial thoughts: I've been wanting to get this book for a while now, and I finally grabbed it. I'm pretty excited for it. It sounds like Mean Girls meets the Exorcist, so I'm definitely in. Hopefully it lives up to my expectations.

Goodreads Summary: In this much-anticipated third volume of the Wicked Years, we return to Oz, seen now through the eyes of the Cowardly Lion - the once tiny cub defended by Elphaba in Wicked. While civil war looms, a tetchy oracle named Yackle prepares for death. Before her final hour, an enigmatic figure known as Brrr - the Cowardly Lion - arrives searching for information about Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West. As payment, Yackle demands some answers of her own. Brrr surrenders his story: abandoned as a cub, his earliest memories are gluey hazes, and his life's path is no Yellow Brick Road. A Lion Among Men chronicles a battle of wits hastened by the Emerald City's approaching armies. At once a portrait of a would-be survivor and a panoramic glimpse of a world gone shrill with war fever, Gregory Maguire's new novel is written with the sympathy and power that have made his books contemporary classics.
Goodreads Rating: 3.28 with over 22,000 ratings
Genre Listing: Fantasy, Fiction, Fairy Tales, Retellings, Magic, Adventure
Get the Book: AmazonBook Depository

Initial Thoughts: This is more of a collection piece for me. I tend to pick up Gregory Maguire books when I can because I love Fairy Tale retellings. This one isn't going to get read for a while because I really want to reread Wicked, and still haven't read Son of a Witch. But it's nice to have it in my collection.
