Discussion: Favorite Genre

Book Discussion Questions:

What is your favorite Book Genre, and why?

Are there any genre's you're trying to branch into, and if so what?

Edited 11/24/2016

I'm hoping to get a little more varied answers with this other than "fiction" or "nonfiction, " so please break it down into whatever sub-genres you feel appropriate.
For me, I would say that my favorite genre is paranormal and fantasy novels. I feel like it takes a creative individual to make up the world that contains paranormal beings and adventures. I also like how authors can take witches, vampires, werewolves, or whatever else and create their rules for it. I find it interesting to read the various ideas on the myths. Also, I'm weird and wish that stuff existed.
I would say that within the broad fantasy genre, I've been reading a lot more steampunk novels lately. I've also been getting into more paranormal beings I don't usually read about. I'm waiting on a retelling of the little Mermaid to be delivered. I've wanted to read more angel/demon books. And while this isn't paranormal, I'd like to delve into some mythology books (This one probably means I should finish the Heroes of Olympus series).
Beyond what I mentioned in the previous paragraph, I don't know if there is anything specific I'm trying to branch into. I am however trying to be more open-minded. I just got a new historical fiction in the mail today, so that will be a nice change of pace. Historical fiction isn't new for me, just something I don't read nearly as often.
Soo yeah. Let me know what's on your mind!

  1. So, I brought this comment box thinking, "Yeah! This will be easy!" It's not.

My favorite book genre? That's hard for me because I read such a different variety of books. I can't come up with a specific genre, but I can say that my favorite type of book has to be any with a macabre or weird element. I guess most of the books that I like, in this sense, fit into the horror genre. I love the edge-of-your-seat feeling and I especially love it when something gives me that "what in the blue HELL did I just read?" reaction.

I'm not trying to branch into any one genre, really. There are a few that I would like to delve into more in depth, though. Like fantasy and noir type mysteries. Those are just a couple of genres that I don't necessarily dislike, but I just haven't given them a good chance yet. I think I would enjoy them if I read more books like that.

Is there any genre you have read reluctantly and realized you loved it?

  2. Thanks for the comment!

I haven't read much horror type of thing myself. I'm not really sure why. I like gory movies, but not books so much? I might have to give more of them a try though.

Hmm, good question. I'm trying to think if I even have an answer to this. I guess the closest I've got to this is contemporary pieces. I generally don't pick them up that often. I wouldn't say I'm necessarily reluctant, but just not something I go into easily. I've read some really good ones, and would probably enjoy more if I bothered to pick them up.

Also this gives me an idea for another discussion, but I'll give it a few days before I post it. I want to try to space them out so I don't run out of things to talk about!
